Irritated by his worn down inheritance, Hud threatens to have Homer stated legally inexperienced so he can take over the cattle ranch. Homer informs his boy he will lose. He confesses that he made errors raising Hud, and was too difficult on him. When  TRACS  accuses him of having a "shape up or ship" policy, Homer questions aloud how a male like Hud can be his son and storms off to his room.

When the herd tests positive for foot-and-mouth disease, the vet orders them to be killed and buried on the ranch under state guidance to keep the disease from spreading. Hud mentions that they could offer some oil rents to keep the cattle ranch lucrative, but Homer declines as he just has pride in livestock, despite his crippling choice to acquire the Mexican livestock.

The assistant gets his rifle and continues to leave the vehicle with the intent of eliminating them. Homer stops him and tells him he will take care of them himself, viewing as how he raised them. The assistant voices his doubts about Homer going through with it, he has no assurance that will take place.

After Lonnie drops her off at the bus station, Hud sees her as she is waiting. He apologizes for his intoxicated assault, however not for his tourist attraction to her, and he would remember her as "the one who got away". Driving back to the cattle ranch, Lonnie sees his grandfather pushing the side of the road after a fall from his horse throughout a survey of the ranch.

Lonnie is repelled by his uncle's treatment of Homer and Alma and leaves the ranch after his grandfather's funeral service, unpredictable if he will ever return. When he informs Hud to put his half of their inheritance in the bank, his uncle responds that Lonnie now sees him as Homer did.
